SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Clary Middle School took a trip into space Tuesday, and they really didn't have to travel any further than the Museum of Science and Technology in downtown Syracuse.

The MOST and Lockheed Martin hosted the students as part of the national 2012 Space Day Program. It was a hands-on experience for the students as they built gumdrop lunar landers and balloon rockets.

The goals of the day were to have fun and promote math, science, technology and engineering education.

"At this age, I think it's really important. They're starting their middle school years and they have a lot of classes ahead of them. And, if they get introduced to the different types of careers that are in science and math and engineering, they'll have an opportunity to decide, now at an early age, what career path they would like to take related to those subjects," said Juanita Dyer, Clary sixth grade science teacher.

Lockheed paid for the trip, which Dyer says really provided great hands-on experience when school budgets and resources are tight.
