BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three local nonprofit agencies received grants from Binghamton University's Student Philanthropy Program Tuesday.

The program is part of an undergraduate class which teaches students about nonprofit agencies and allows them to select agencies to fund.

This year, $10,000 was divided between the Oasis After School Program, the United Health Services Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton.

Those involved say the process benefits both the students and the grant recipients.

"It taught the class the challenges of the nonprofit sector, how the nonprofit sector operates, how to evaluate different organizations you are interested in giving money to," said BU sophomore Daniel Romberger.

"It's been an honor to be a part of this. They have assisted us in bridging gap between the state funding and local funding," said Holly Welfel, Oasis After School Program Director.

Funding for the grants is provided by the Learning by Giving Foundation.
