ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Just about a half hour before police responded to the bank robbery, they were called to Elmira's southside for reported gunshots.

The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Broadway, Hopkins and Baty Streets.

Police say they believe there were a couple of different groups, but are still looking for a motive behind the shooting.

“Indications are at least five shots were fired. We have recovered evidence of that at the scene. There's indications that a long gun possibly used, an assault type rifle, it was described as. As well as possibly a hand gun," Elmira Police Captain Joseph Kain said.

Police also say they received a report of a small accident as a result of the incident.

No injuries were reported from the accident or the shooting.
