ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- 2012 will be the final year for Oneida County's coroners. The county legislature voted Wednesday to abolish the four coroner positions and establish a Medical Examiner's Office.

County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. first proposed the move in his State of the County address earlier this year. He's said the medical examiner will be a pathologist who fits in better with the chain of investigation at crime scenes.

Coroner David Julian spoke out and asked for time for he and his colleagues to correct inefficiencies in the office, but instead, the new medical examiner position will go into effect January 1.
