ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- A plan to restore rail service to a Town of Gouverneur paper mill will be the subject of a public hearing next week at the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency.

Right now, the Clearwater Paper Mill at Natural Dam relies on trucks to move freight in and out of the mill. That's because the bridge over the Oswegotchie River has been closed for several years and is in need of improvements.

The IDA would like to take temporary title of the bridge in order to rehabilitate the structure with a $200,000 state grant.

The nearly two mile rail spur runs from the mill, passes over the river and connects with the CSX main track near State Route 11.

A center portion of the bridge actually gave way in the early 70s.

The IDA's public hearing will be held Wednesday.
