MANLIUS, N.Y. -- It looks like some baby swans could be coming to the Manlius Pond this summer after all.

The village mayor announced Friday that the mother swan had laid her first egg since her previous eggs were destroyed back in April. It was a case that drew attention and support from around the country.

Police have since arrested a suspect who they believe destroyed the eggs and the village is now trying to move on.

"They represent everything that's good and beautiful about the village, as well as the resiliency of our residents. I mean, the village in 200 years of existing has had its tough times, so has the swan pond. And just to see that she's back on an egg, it's hopeful for us that there's a better tomorrow for us," said Manlius Village Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin.

According to a swan expert working with the village, the mother could lay up to eight eggs to make up for the lost ones.

The mayor says it will be a little more than a month until the egg hatches. And to make sure no one interrupts to process, neighbors have teamed up to create a Swan Pond Watch and the village is also installing a new surveillance camera that was donated.
