ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Fort Drum's Mountaineers hockey team hit the ice in Cicero Saturday to raise money for charity.

The entrance fee for the exhibition game at the Cicero Twin Rinks, as well as proceeds from raffles and special giveaways, were collected to give to the USO.

The Mountaineers are made up of both 10th mountain division soldiers and civilians with the Department of Defense. Despite their busy schedules, players say they make time for the team because they simply love the game.

John Laursen, the Assistant Captain of the Mountaineers said, “Ya know we're not trying to make a million bucks a year, we do everything in our off time. A lot of our guys will skate until 11 o'clock at night when we have to be in at 4 or 5 in the morning. It's just the love for a sport. And if we can use it to raise money for a charity like the USO who donates to the Wounded Warrior Project, there's no reason not to."

Players said the USO has done a lot for the military and for their team, including help them get practice time for some of their away games.
