BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Greater Binghamton Airport holds a disaster drill Saturday, to test how quickly crews respond to an emergency. The goal was to check the airport's emergency plan, and find room for improvement.

Vehicles were used to represent broken parts of a 50-seat regional jet. County-wide firefighters put out fires, and emergency medical services dealt with triage, treatment and transportation of victims and casualties, played by volunteers.

Staff from the Broome County Department of Aviation, the County Executive’s Office and Emergency Services, among other groups participated in the drill. Organizers said the mock disaster will better-prepare the airport and county for the future.

Debbie Preston, the Broome County Executive said, “We just have a great crew here they are always looking forward to what could happen. To make our residents feel as safe as they can in Broome County. "

Carl Beardsley, Broome County Commissioner of Aviation said, “People should be very pleased that the entire community is working to make this happen. It's not just the emergency services team, its mutual aid, it's all emergency services coming in to make this a success."

The disaster drill takes place every three years in compliance of Federal Aviation Regulations.
