May is Riesling Month in wine country
The Finger Lakes annually see thousands of visitors each year who make their way to upstate New York to sample some of the region's finest wines. As our Bill Mich tells us, all month long, vineyards and businesses will be celebrating a wine that has helped the area become nationally recognized.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Whether you are a wine connoisseur or just enjoy an occasional glass at dinner, any wine drinker can appreciate a good deal.
Elizabeth Stamp, of Lakewood Wineyards said, “We are doing a Riesling four pack which is two vintages that are not currently available and then our currently available vintages of our dry and semi-dry Riesling. And we are offering it at about 30 percent discount."
The reason that Lakewood Vineyards and so many others are holding these special promotions is because in the Finger Lakes region, May is Riesling month. And Riesling is what that helped turn the area into the wine country that it is.
Katie Roller, the Wagner Vineyards Director of Marketing and PR said, “In the summer, because we get those nice long hot days that sweeten up the grapes and then at night it cools way down so that we can retain the acidity in the grapes. And what that does is that allows us to make a variety of Rieslings."
You would be hard pressed to find a winery in the Finger Lakes region that does not make at least one type of Riesling. There are hundreds of acres devoted to its production and for good reason, because it keeps customers coming back.
"Riesling is definitely the wine that we consistently win medals on and I think it brings people in our doors because they heard of our Rieslings. But it also gives us an opportunity to present the other things that we make,” said Stamp.
So whether you prefer sweet, dry, or somewhere in between, you are bound to find a Riesling that suits your taste during the month of May in the Finger Lakes.
