FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- It's been almost ten years since Special Olympics Day has been held on Fort Drum and the soldiers couldn't wait to volunteer.
Hundreds signed up to help out with Friday's event.
The athletes competed in bowling, aquatics, basketball, track and field and adaptive games.
Those involved with the day's events say everyone who participated should be proud of what they accomplished.
"These kids out here today are showing courage against tough odds, tough situations and that's the definition of a hero," said Major General Mark Milley, 10th Mountain Division Commander.
Organizers hope to make the competition an annual event.
