CENTRAL NEW YORK -- It is prime planting season, and by the looks of it at local garden centers, plenty of people are taking advantage of the gorgeous weather this weekend to get their plants in the ground.

At Chuck Hafner's, the popular picks this weekend were hanging baskets and newly developed flowers like surfinias. They say if you have a certain color or special plant you want, it's best to shop soon because the next two weekends typically wipe out most of the selection.

Chuck Hafner, of Hafner's said, “No matter where you go your selection is best this week. It won't get any better after memorial day because a lot of the stuff will be gone and it takes month to grow a hanging basket and to grow some of these plants."

Hafner offered a tip for anyone purchasing a hanging basket, he said if you can put it in a bigger pot, it will perform better for you all season and require less watering.
