BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- A fun weekend at the nation’s fifth oldest zoo, as families celebrated Endangered Species Day in Binghamton.

Over 500 people showed up to visit with eight endangered species Binghamton Zoo including Amur leopards, red pandas and even some bees. There was a red panda learning station, face painting, and more.

The goal was to promote education and environmental awareness, among other things.
Employees say there are many reasons animals, like red pandas become endangered.

Patti Searles, a Binghamton Zoo Education Curator said, “A lot of species, even if they come back in numbers their environment has been destroyed by over-population or over-logging that it's hard to reintroduce animals to that area again."

This weekend is also Heritage Weekend in the Southern Tier. In honor of that the zoo will be joining in on the fun all weekend and kids can take a ride on the carousel.
