Investigators have confirmed what many in the Broome County community of Triangle already suspected: The two bodies found inside a burned out home are that of a three-year-old child and her father. And the details surrounding their deaths are equally disturbing. Our Elyse Mickalonis has more.

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Monday afternoon, Broome County Sheriff David Harder revealed the disturbing details behind the house fire on Saturday night in the Town of Triangle. We now know the two bodies that were found early Sunday morning belong to Larry Oney, 61, and Allison Oney, 3. Police say the brutal events that led up to the fire did not have to happen.

What happened Saturday night at 54 Old Catskill Turnpike was a mystery until Monday.

“Got a three-year-old girl who didn’t have to die. Her father lost it when his wife said she wanted a divorce,” Broome County Sheriff David Harder said.

Harder confirmed Monday what many in Triangle have feared since Saturday’s house fire. The bodies found early Sunday morning are believed to be those of Larry Oney, 61, and his three-year-old daughter, Allison Oney.

“Allison will be identified through DNA as she’s so young there were no teeth to go back on to, where we have the dental records on Larry,” Harder said.

Police used those records to identify Larry Oney, a UHS physician.

An autopsy showed that the little girl was shot in the chest and her father was shot in the head. Both died from smoke inhalation.

Police have long thought Saturday's fire off of Route 206 was not an accident and Monday, the frightening details were revealed.

According to detectives, Melissa Oney, 39, told her husband she wanted a divorce. Over the next two hours, Larry Oney assaulted his wife tied her to a chair and cut her Achilles tendon. He also threatened to burn their family home down with him and Allison inside, while she watched tied up.

Melissa Oney was able to free herself when Larry Oney carried her outside to a vehicle. She drove down the road and called 911.

Harder said, “The deputies responding were advised there was a subject in the house with a gun who was going to kill the daughter and burn the house down.”

But by the time police arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. They've since determined that Larry Oney doused the home in gasoline.

“When the fire companies were able to knock down the fire, the Town of Triangle excavation came in and began to dig for bodies,” Harder said.

Melissa Oney underwent surgery Saturday night at Wilson Hospital, where she is still receiving care.

Larry Oney’s death is being ruled a suicide and Allison's is being ruled a murder.
Sheriff Harder said there was no history of domestic violence between the couple and no known history of mental illness. But neighbors we spoke with earlier in the day said Larry Orney did not have a good relationship with his neighbors and was known to have a temper.
