JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- It was a scary ride home for students on a South Jefferson school bus Monday afternoon. A speeding car rear-ended their bus on Interstate 81, causing the bus to roll over on the side of the highway.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. between the Adams Center and Watertown exits.

Two students, a student's aid and the driver suffered only minor injuries, but the two students were taken to Samaritan Medical Center as a precaution.

"This situation could have been a lot worse. The driver did have the kids buckled up with seatbelts. As you know, seatbelts are required in New York State in passenger cars, but on buses, it's not always required, since the driver did have the students belted in, I'm sure that prevented any serious injuries," said New York State Police Sergeant Brian McDermott.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Right now, the driver of the car is facing charges of excessive speed, with other possible charges pending.
