HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Frankfort woman is dead and two others hospitalized after a crash that followed a high speed chase in Herkimer County.
Authorities say a Herkimer police officer tried to pull over Daniel Conklin, 24, in the village around 11 a.m. Thursday. They say Conklin threw a 22-year-old pregnant female passenger out the door before driving away.
Conklin then led the officer on a high-speed pursuit for about five to six miles on Route 5 before hitting an SUV that was pulling out from Paratore Road.
Two women in the SUV, Gail Pietruska, 65, and her sister, Louise Meddlis, 54, were taken to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. Pietruska was later flown to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she later died from her injuries.
Conklin was also flown to Upstate University Hospital with broken legs. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police say Conklin is currently on parole for criminal possession of stolen property and was driving with a suspended license.
The investigation is ongoing.
