Thousands turn out for lighting of watchfire
GEDDES, N.Y. -- It is a sight to be seen outside the New York State Fairgrounds. The annual Memorial Day Watchfire was lit as the sun went down Sunday.
Flames quickly engulfed hundreds of flags and signs that were draped over the wood pile. The watchfire is one of the few ways to properly dispose of an American flag. This year was the 25th anniversary of the event at the fairgrounds and organizers say they hope to see younger vets continue the effort well into the future.
