ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Authorities have recovered the headstone from the Civil War era that had been missing from a cemetery in Oneida County.

Deputies say DPW employees found the headstone in the Town of Western Park in Westernville near a playground area. They say they believe it was meticulously placed there because it was the headstone of a child.

The stone disappeared from the Evergreen Cemetery in Trenton sometime during the Memorial Day weekend. Suspects also knocked over a different headstone in the cemetery, which belonged to a veteran of World War I, World War II and Korea. The stone was knocked off its base and flipped upside down.

Officials are still investigating the theft and the damage in the cemetery.

If you have any information about the incidents, leave a message with Sheriff's Deputies at (315) 896-2985.
