ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- An elderly woman is saved from a fire in Mattydale thanks to a quick response from two Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputies.

The fire started at a home on Elbow Road around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Officials said a 96-year-old woman was trapped inside, but luckily two deputies were in the area when the call came in.

Kevin Walsh, the Onondaga County Sheriff said, “They went in through the smoke and the flames and got into the bedroom. They couldn't bring her back out because the smoke was so heavy at that point that they passed her out through a window to her waiting grandson."

Walsh identified the deputies as Sergeant Crayg Dykes and Sergeant Jeremy Young. He said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen as a grease fire.
