SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The latest graduation numbers have been released by the State Education Department and it's good and bad news for the Syracuse City School District.
The graduation rate for students who started school in 2007 is up 2.5 percent in city schools, but still less than half of students are graduating on time.
In Syracuse, 48.4 percent of students graduated on time. That's compared to 45.9 in the previous year.
"The accountability measure was increased, the graduation requirements were increased and actually, the number of students we had in our buildings increased. So when you take a look at those three things, we're really happy that our graduation improved," said Bryan Nolan, SCSD Director of Secondary Schools and Career education.
Here's a look at how it breaks down by school:
- Tech Central was the best of the city schools at nearly 70 percent
- Fowler by far the worst at 28.3 percent
These numbers don't include the students who graduated in August of 2011 or those who finished school at a later date.
Syracuse continues to lag behind three of the other four major city school districts in New York State. The only city with a worse graduation rate is Rochester. Still, the State Department of Education says numbers across the board were up this year. Statewide, 74 percent of the students who started ninth grade in 2007 had graduated after four years.
