ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- More than one hundred people came out to help beautify their community Wednesday. Kindergartners from Enders Road Elementary School in Manlius and their families raked, weeded and planted at the Mill Run Park in the Village of Manlius.

The "Little Hands, Big Plans" cleanup effort is part of the class' character education program. Each grade participates in the community service project. The kindergartners chose Mill Run Park because they've taken field trips there for science class. They collected more than 4,500 bottles and cans since January to pay for the supplies to beautify the park.

"They have taken ownership of the park because it has become part of their learning this year. This is a place that they know and love now, and it's a place that they will visit again in second grade for more science activities. And it's now a park that all the families visit and enjoy," said Diane Lewis, the Manlius Kindergarten Teacher in charge of the project.

Lewis says she hopes service projects in the future will continue to beautify Mill Run Park.
