NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- In only 25 minutes, Nik Wallenda fulfilled a childhood dream. "This has been everything that I've worked for, for a long time, and you know what, it's as real as it gets now, isn't it? There's no turning back. It's done, it's official, it's in the history books," said Nik Wallenda, wire walker.
Walking 1,500 feet on a high wire from Niagara Falls, New York to Niagara Falls, Canada was two years in the making. Getting permission to attempt this stunt was not easy, but after long negotiations and $1.3 million, it was approved.
The seventh generation member of the famous Flying Wallendas has quite an obstacle ahead of him. The potential drop was 173 feet, and because of that, he wore a tether as part of an agreement with ABC. Some people thought it took away from the drama, but most people we talked to said it had no affect on the whole experience.
"It didn't feel that bad, so I think it actually ended up benefitting me," said Wallenda.
Wallenda has made longer tight rope walks before and has also gone across a tight rope on a bicycle. He even proposed to his wife while he was suspended in the air, but according to him, this stunt was by far the most challenging.
"My favorite stunt that I've ever done was the recreation of my great-grandfather's pyramid that took his life in 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. That is one that will be with me forever, but so is this, and I would say it is up there with the best," said Wallenda.
Thousands of people came out to watch Wallenda attempt this historic walk on both the American side and the Canadian side. The fans certainly got what they came out to see, it was a great event that went off without a hitch.
