Corning tries to become "Most Fun Town" in the country

By: Bill Mich

A few months back, Hammondsport was declared a co-winner in Budget Travel Magazine's search for the coolest small town in America. Now another Steuben County community has a chance to gain some national recognition as well. Our Bill Mich has more on Corning's effort to become the Most Fun Town in the country.

CORNING, N.Y. -- If you are going to show off the city of Corning to people from out of town, the Museum of Glass is not a bad place to start. And making your own glass will certainly provide an unforgettable memory.

"I've never made a glass flower before. I didn't even think it was possible or that it was that easy," said Patricia Serrano with Team Fresh Traveler.

The reason that Patricia and her traveling partner, Anna, were in Corning is because they are taking part in the "Best of the Road" competition. Five teams were put together to determine the best place to visit for things like best food and the most friendly people. Corning is up for the title of the Most Fun Town.

"We all compile video blogs and at then end of the competition, each town is judged based on the team's presentation and five towns get named the best small town in America for those specific categories," said Anna Haas, also with Team Fresh Traveler.

Corning is the first stop on a six-city adventure that will take one month to complete. Other places that will be putting their best foot forward to claim the "Most Fun" title include Santa Claus, Indiana and DelRay Beach, Florida.

"I think that every town is going to have a different idea of what that means for them. And we are really excited to let the towns show us what's fun and give us new and different experiences that we've never had before," Haas said.

The winner will be announced on July 25 during a one-hour special that airs on the Travel Channel. And while Corning may only be the first stop on their journey, the Crystal City seems to have made a lasting impression.

"Corning is beautiful. It is really nice to get out of New York City and it is only four or five hours away from New York. This is the perfect weekend getaway for a New Yorker," said Serrano.

Let's hope the judges agree.
