SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Downtown Syracuse commemorates the 147th anniversary of the abolition of slavery with a Juneteenth event in Clinton Square.

Juneteenth is the celebration of the official freeing of the last African-American slaves in America on June 19th, 1865. Saturday's celebration featured food, music and lectures, giving everyone in attendance a chance to celebrate the historic occasion.

Organizers say Syracuse was a hotbed for the abolitionist movement. "We're on the actual historic boundaries, of Clinton Square, historic Clinton Square, with Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Bishop Jermaine Wesley Logan, and of course the Jerry Rescue. Some incredible history happened right here in Syracuse," said Master of Ceremonies Dr. Rick Wright.

Organizers hope the event continues to grow each year.
