SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was a celebration of Native American music and culture Sunday at Syracuse University's Hendricks Chapel. Grammy Award-winning artist Joanne Shenendoah headlined a fundraiser to help send her musical group to the Vatican.

They are hoping to perform at the Mass of Thanksgiving, when Kateri Tekakwitha is canonized. Tekakwitha will be the first Native American Saint, a proud achievement for all nations.

"We're just here to celebrate her today because we don't celebrate people enough in life, who have done good deeds. So that's why we're here," said Shenandoah.

The canonization is scheduled to take place on October 21st. Ticket and merchandise sales helped raise money toward the trip.
