ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- First time homeowners in St. Lawrence County could receive a little bit of financial assistance.
The North Country Housing Council has applied for a $750,000 grant to help low or moderate income families purchase homes of their own.
The grant money will assist with closing costs, down payments and home rehabilitation. The organization plans to be able to help 25 or more households.
“It’s a real need for us to assist first time home buyers. We have a lot of them who are able to make a mortgage, a lot of times cheaper than what they’re using for rent right at the moment. And so that down payment is what they need to get into their first homes,” said homeownership manager and educator Annette Bowman.
Applicants will be required to take classes for first time homeowners.
The North Country Housing Council has received numerous grants for this program over the past 20 years. They say they will know by September if they receive this year’s funding.
