ENDICOTT, N.Y. -- It's a day that many golfers in Broome County have been looking forward to.

"We waited so long and we all just wanted to play so well, it was great," said Town of Maine resident Cindy Kerr.

"This is our home course. We missed it very much since September. We love it," said Binghamton resident Colleen Martino.

The En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott finally reopened for the season Wednesday after it was severely damaged in last September's flood.

"In early September, the golf course was 95 percent underwater, a good 80 percent was full of silt and mud and full of debris and it just didn't look like a golf course back then," explained En-Joie Director of Golf Mike Deuel.

Officials spent the past several months doing things like removing debris and reseeding the surface so that the course would be ready for golfers to tee off.

"The maintenance crew worked extremely hard over the last 9 1/2 months, removing debris, prepared the surface to be reseeded, reseeded the surface, cleaned out the bunkers, reworked those areas, fixed water hazards, just had to clean and start from scratch," said Deuel.

Efforts that haven't gone unnoticed by golfers as they move past the flood and onto the greens.

"The course is in fabulous shape. It's absolutely remarkable what they've done to get this ready," said Vestal resident Michele Tidick.

En-Joie will host the Dick's Sporting Goods Open this August. That event was pushed back from its original date because of the flooding.
