UTICA, N.Y. -- School's out for the summer in Utica, and the city and its school district are teaming up to make sure kids who rely on school lunches have access to healthy meals.

The city's Summer Food Service Program kicks off on Monday. More than 20 parks, pools, and other sites around the city will have free lunches available for kids 18 and under.

District officials say about 2,400 meals have been served in summers past. They expect an even bigger turnout since budget cuts have forced the cancelation of summer school.

"Numbers of 2,400 - we're missing a lot of kids there. So we just wanted to get the word out so more kids know about it. It may be the one nutritious, full meal that they get throughout the day," said Mary Kay Van Dreason, director of the Food Services Program for the Utica City School District.

The lunch program runs until August 10. To find out about serving locations near you, visit www.uticacsd.org.
