MANLIUS, N.Y. -- The moment the village of Manlius has been waiting weeks for has finally arrived. Four baby swans hatched on Monday, and folks are getting their first look at the newest additions to the Swan Pond.

A group of volunteers had been keeping a close eye on the eggs after several swan eggs were destroyed in April. A Jamesville man allegedly hopped the fence and smashed the eggs two weeks before they were about to hatch. Volunteers say the incident has served as a wakeup call for many.

"There's been a rejuvinization of community spirit here in Manlius that I think was strong before, but this served as a reminder of the treasure we have here at the Swan Pond. The Swan Pond is over 200 years old," said Laurie Venditti, Swan Watch Volunteer Coordinator.

30 volunteers have been keeping a watch on the Swan Pond over the past six weeks.
