NEW YORK STATE -- A 28-year-old Tompkins County Legislator will represent the Democratic Party in the 23rd district.
Nate Shinagawa won a three way race against Leslie Danks Burke and Melissa Dobson.
Shinagawa has been on the county legislature for six years. He will face off against republican incumbent Tom Reed, who won the seat in a special election in 2010.
Shinagawa credited his primary opponents with keeping the race on message and elevating the discussion for democrats.
"Because of this primary, people have seen what strong democratic values look like and they know that it stands strong against the failures in Congress, this republican Congress," Shinagawa said.
