OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- A World War II veteran and long-serving American Legion member was honored with a special ceremony.

State Senator Patty Ritchie issued a proclamation recognizing Herb Pelton's service at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Central Square Thursday. The 87-year-old Pelton has been with the American Legion for 64 years.

The event also served as a showcase for the park, which has been in the works for about two years. It grew out of a local Eagle Scout project and Legion members say it's an important tool for educating the area's youth.

"We want our young folks to grow up knowing that it's important to support the Constitution of the United States and the freedoms that we have, because freedom is not free,” said Robert Lyons, former Commander of American Legion Post 915.

Lyons says the park is an ongoing project and they hope to add even more to it in the coming years.
