Two local athletes qualify for London Olympics

OREGON -- Two local athletes have secured their tickets for the Summer Olympics. Elmira native Molly Huddle and Tully High School graduate Lopez Lomong each qualified for the London games with strong performances in the 5,000 meter Olympic trials in Oregon.

Huddle is the current U.S. record holder at 5,000 meters and was the favorite in the women's race. Huddle ran a strong race and led for much of the home stretch before being nipped at the line by Julie Culley. The second place finish was all that mattered, though, as she qualified for her first Olympic games.

Lomong was looking to make his second Olympics after qualifying in the 1,500 back in 2008. The Sudanese refugee is new to the 5,000 meter distance, but you wouldn't have known it, as he finished in third place, taking the final spot on the team.
