NEW YORK STATE -- The relatively dry and breezy conditions we've been seeing around the region recently are ideal conditions for brush fires to ignite and spread.
Firefighters say when grass is dry and the air is warm, fires can spark easily from something like carelessly discarding a cigarette butt.
They can often spread quickly, and are difficult to fight. Fire officials say it is important to keep some simple safety tips in mind.
"If you're going to be working outside, you want to wet down any area, and make sure if you have an outdoor fire, like a camp fire, you want to make sure that you extinguish it properly before you leave the area," said Melissa Abend, Sentinal Heights Fire Department First Assistant Chief.
