STERLING, N.Y. -- Five people were injured when their car collided with a tractor trailer in the Cayuga County town of Sterling.

The crash happened just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of State Routes 104 and 38.

All five people inside the car were taken to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries, including the front passenger, who had to be air lifted.

Police say the truck driver, who was not injured, probably saved lives by swerving to avoid hitting the car head on.

"I mean, he has a loaded tractor trailer, 80,000 pounds, coming at 55. You don't have a lot of time to maneuver. I mean, it's kinda an enclosed area here, so he did a pretty good job of preventing any serious physical injury or death to the occupants of the car," said New York State Trooper Vincent Abbate.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but police say they do expect to ticket the 18-year-old driver of the car for failing to yield.
