Manlius police are investigating a crash that killed an East Syracuse teen while riding his bike. It happened just before 8 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Fremont and Kirkville roads in Manlius. Austin Elmore, 17, was on his way to summer school. Our Iris St. Meran has the latest on the investigation.

MANLIUS, N.Y. -- Kirkville Road at Fremont Road is a busy intersection in Manlius. For most of Tuesday, it was closed while police worked to determine the circumstances that led to a vehicle hitting Austin Elmore, 17, while riding his bike.

Manlius Police Captain Kevin Schaefer said, "We have our accident investigation technicians on scene. They're actually using equipment to reconstruct the accident so they'll know precisely where the bicyclist and motorist were when the accident occurred."

Police have determined, so far, the teen was riding on Fremont Road when he was hit by a vehicle traveling east on Kirkville Road just before 8 a.m. Elmore was severely injured and was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he later died.

Bobbi McClary, a friend and classmate, had just dropped off her bike when she saw the accident.

McClary said, "All of a sudden, I look back and I just see him crossing and a car just hit him and he goes up 20 feet in the air, all the way and falls on the other side of the road like face first."

She was one of the first to come to his aid and she says they both were on their way to summer school, which was scheduled to start a short time later at East Syracuse-Minoa High School.

"I didn't even recognize who it was at first and I went over there and looked at his face and was like ‘Oh my God,’” McClary added. “I just started crying."

Schaefer said, "Anytime anyone's killed in an accident, it's a tragedy. But certainly somebody who's so young elevates that."

Investigators say they're still in the preliminary stage of the investigation. No tickets have been issued at this time. Members of the special investigations section are asking for the public's help.
