SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Timing was everything for Syracuse firefighters Wednesday morning as an inspection crew came across a fire in progress. It started at a single family home on East Division Street.
The fire started in the back of the home and spread to a carriage house behind it. The property was vacant, and crews were able to make quick work of the fire thanks to a daily routine that turned out to be anything but routine.
"Roughly 30 percent of the fire department's on the road any given hour of daylight. We have a vigorous inspection program. It's designed to find potential problems before they happen. It's unusual we find problems as they're happening. But, it worked out good today," said Steve Cavuto, Deputy Fire Chief.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
