130 women continue training for Iron Girl

Ten weeks down and three more to go as 130 women prepare for the Iron Girl Triathlon in August. They're part of Fleet Feet's Tri Training program and in just a few weeks, they will compete in a half mile swim, an 18 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. Our very own Katie Gibas is one of those athletes. Last time we left Katie and her teammates, they were just beginning their training. Now, we'll take a look at their progress over the last few months. Every week many participate in the CNY Tri Club's Wednesday night series where they can practice each leg of the race.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- For Sarah Bettinger and Laura Currey, it's all about Trying it Again. Now, they're halfway through their second triathlon season.

"Triathlon, it's almost as if I don't know what I did with my time before because the days that I'm resting, I have a hard time resting," said Currey.

Bettinger added, "It's that little rush that you get when you finally accomplish what you never thought you could."

And for Bettinger and Currey, this year is all about going bigger and faster.

"I've been doing a lot of the harder distances and longer distances and going for speed. So in terms of what it's become, last year was about completion, this year it's kind of about competition with myself. We're taking it up a notch," said Bettinger.

Currey added, "Training has been amazing. I've made incredible strides forward. In the pool, I actually learned how to breathe this year. On the bike, I've cut off about 13 minutes from my Iron Girl time from last year and about five minutes off my run, so I'm moving towards my goal to cut my time down substantially this year."

Even though there are days when training can be excruciatingly tough and a challenge to fit into busy lives, it's family, friends and teammates who keep these women trying harder.

"I definitely have made a lot of changes in what I eat, how I train, just focusing on hydration through the day before, looking at it completely different," said Currey.

Bettinger added, "It's actually my son, how proud he is of all the little accomplishments I've done. Like after the 70.3, he was excited to be able to wear my nice shirt I got from that race. Just seeing him get lit up about me doing these sort of things and asking if he can do them when he grows up."

Over the next several weeks, Bettinger and Currey will continue to up their training as they prepare to join 1,300 other female triathletes in the Iron Girl triathlon.

We'll be checking back in with the athletes just before the race, which happens at Oneida Shores County Park August 5th.
