SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- When the Upstate Cancer Center opens, there will be a little extra help for women with ovarian cancer.

Thursday, $5,000 went to the hospital to start the Hope for Heather Angel Fund. Hope for Heather promotes ovarian cancer awareness and research.

The founder, who lost her daughter to cancer, says the money will help with out-of-pocket expenses, like meals, transportation and parking during hospital stays, and other items like wigs and scarves.

"We're thrilled the cancer center and really want to make a difference in our community and reach out and assist and touch all the patients we possibly can to help," said Hope for Heather President Frieda Weeks.

Ovarian cancer is mostly detected in its later stages because of non-specific symptoms like bloating, quickly feeling full and abdominal pain.
