ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- When temperatures are as high as they've been, the last thing you want is your power to go out, which means no air conditioning or fans. But that's exactly what thousands of people had to deal with not once, but twice, on Friday.

Early Friday, more than 10,000 people were left without power in Onondaga County after a transformer caught on fire. Their power has since been restored.

At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, over 17,000 residents and businesses across Syracuse also lost power. An equipment failure at the Teall Avenue substation caused the outage, which spanned from the northside to the suburbs of Mattydale to North Syracuse.

"I came downstairs and went over to Lee's Garden and noticed they didn't have any power. Went up the street a little bit and noticed a few places didn't have power as well. It's pretty typical, from what I understand, this side of Eastwood, there is a power grid and some places have it and other places don't," Eastwood resident Chaz Featherstone said.

By 8:30 p.m., National Grid was able to restore power to about 1,000 users.

The outage also forced officials to postpone Friday night’s Syracuse Chiefs game at Alliance Bank Stadium. That will now take place Saturday night.
