GEDDES, N.Y. -- As work continues to clean up Onondaga Lake, volunteers are also working to improve the land that surrounds it. The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps organized its inaugural stewardship event on Saturday.

Volunteers came out to work at the Geddes Brook wetlands. They planted native shrubs and plants with the goal of transforming the area into a wildlife habitat. Organizers said that will also help protect Onondaga Lake.

"We're creating a sinuous channel and flood plains that will actually allow the first flush of storm water coming off all the parking lots and all the surrounding areas and retain that. So, what we do, is we slow that water down, that water has lots of nutrients in it, it helps us grow this wetland, but it also reduces the storm water impact on the lake," explained Jeremy Neumann, landscape architect.
