SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse man faces charges after police said he broke into a neighbors apartment and tried to rape her. According to investigators, Ross Sanford, 43, used a ladder to get into the bedroom of a 21-year-old woman's apartment.

They said he than disrobed and got on top of the victim while she was still sleeping, putting a towel over her face to prevent her from screaming. The victim was able to fight him off and call 911. Sanford is now charged with first degree attempted rape, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and burglary.

Sanford is a registered level three sex offender from a 1987 conviction for first degree sexual abuse involving a 10-year-old male.
