OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- An Oswego County jury has reached a verdict in a civil trial over the ownership of three donkeys.

The original owners, Betty and Henry Suhr of Fulton, were suing Hannibal resident Kim Sitzer to get the animals back.

The disagreement over Arturo, Libby and Olive has been ongoing since 2009 when the Suhrs attempted to reclaim the animals from Sitzer. They say the donkeys were on loan. Sitzer says she believed they were hers to keep after caring for them for several years.

While fighting for a trial, the Suhrs waged a publicity campaign against Sitzer by posting signs in their yard on Route 48 in Fulton.

After two days of testimony and only ten minutes of deliberations, the jury unanimously sided with Sitzer.

"Today's verdict was absolutely wonderful with six jurors all in my favor, for all the rotten things they've said about me over the past three years, the signs that have gone up and now my name is finally cleared of all that," said Sitzer.

One of the donkeys, Arturo has since died during the ongoing custody battle.

The verdict cannot be appealed.

The Suhrs did not comment.
