SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Off duty firefighters and police officers took time to give back to the community Wednesday. The volunteers helped children with disabilities take in all there is to offer at Valley Field Days in Syracuse.
The free event allows the kids to enjoy all the rides before it opens to the public and finding out whether the kids or the volunteers enjoy it more can be difficult.
"I mean, you walk away feeling pretty good about it. That was so simple, but you can see the immediate gratification. The smiles on these kids faces, you know something simple, going on one of these kiddie rides and it does it gives you a great feeling when you help out," Syracuse Fire Chief Mark McLees said.
Valley Field Days officially kicks off at 5 p.m. Wednesday and runs through Sunday.
