SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The long-awaited opening of the Centro Transit Hub in downtown Syracuse is finally in sight. Officials announced Wednesday that it will open to the public the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 4th.

The new facility on East Adams Street will accommodate 22 Centro buses. It will allow for passengers to wait for their buses inside or outdoors and there will be no more crossing the street to catch a transfer.

The $17 million project was expected to be completed in the spring, but officials say they were delayed because substantial changes had to be made to the traffic patterns at the intersections adjacent to the facility. They say it's been a long time coming.

"It means a lot. It means a lot to myself. I've been in Centro now for 36 years. I found a newspaper clipping that showed we were first discussing this back in 1974, before I even came to work at Centro. It means obviously a lot to our customers," said Frank Kobliski, Executive Director of Centro.

Officials say the hub will actually be complete in August, but they don't want to open at the same time as Centro State Fair operations are going on.
