ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Onondaga County's Industrial Development Agency is saying "no" to a request for an audit by the county comptroller.

Comptroller Robert Antonacci, in light of disputes about other recent development projects, wants to take a closer look at a plan to turn a vacant lot into the new Clay Business Park. He says his interest was piqued by the agency's approval of more than $60,000 to hire a firm to market the new development.

But IDA members say their agency was created as an independent body by the state and Antonacci has no legal authority to perform an audit.

The comptroller is now urging county lawmakers to go slow on okaying millions of dollars in work to bring sewer lines to the business park.

“These agencies dole out significant tax breaks. And I think the community must ask itself, are we prepared to give $5.8 million to an agency that refuses oversight of a local elected official,” Antonacci said.

The IDA says the comptroller can find the information he wants on the state's Authorities Budget Office website.
