ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Children with disabilities are being empowered this week at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College.
Lose the Training Wheels is a non-profit charitable organization that teaches children with disabilities how to ride a conventional two wheel bike. More importantly, they're teaching children to become life-long learners and boosting their self confidence.
"What wasn't possible at one point now seems possible. It's not just the riding aspect. You know, I’ve had kids, just yesterday, be like, are you sure I and ready to do this, are you sure I can do this, why are you doing this to me. They get up on that two wheel bike, they feel that wind. They go outside and it's a whole new sense of freedom, independence, self confidence," Rachel Kent said.
The children are taught using a special roller of varying sizes instead of a back wheel. Those rollers become more and more tapered with experience, until it feels like a conventional two wheel bike.
