Destiny USA holds another job fair
Filling hundreds of jobs takes time as the stores and restaurants at the new Destiny USA are finding out. YNN's Bill Carey says the mall was holding another job fair to help staff those new businesses.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It was the second time that the new tenants of the expanded Carousel Center met with prospective employees. And again, hundreds of job seekers came to the mall.
“At this moment in my life, anything really. I'm unemployed. It's tough now, especially with a college education. Not finding any work. Tough economy. So I'll take anything I can get at the moment,” Steven Gasapo said.
There are some stores already in operation in the new addition. Many more will join that list by August 2nd, the date when the mall will be rebranded Destiny USA. But, by then, only about 25 percent of the tenants will be up and operating. The rest are expected to start operations by the end of the year.
The slow roll out of new employers has been helpful, the mall says, in insuring there are enough workers to go around.
“If we had a hundred stores coming on line, restaurants, the entertainment uses. If everybody was opening on that same day, I might have a little concern. But I think the way this thing is rolling out, the way it's all coming together, I think people are going to be able to find the help,” mall manager Rob Schoeneck said.
When all is said and done, there will be a total of about 1,600 new jobs created.
During the long battle to launch the mall project, Frank Fiumano was a familiar face. One of a group of original Destiny workers paid $60,000 a year. Their jobs disappeared as long delays struck.
But Fiumano is back, now managing one of the new stores at the mall and still a Destiny proponent, pointing to the hundreds of new jobs.
Fiumano said, “I don't want to say it's unheard of, you know, but, that's a great thing for the city. What I like about it, and it's because maybe my heart is still here from back in the day, it's like, yeah, we told you this was going to happen. For the naysayers, it's like, yeah, it's happening.”
The mall management expects to be holding yet another job fair in August.
