Ever had a cool idea on how to improve something in your hometown, but didn't know who to share it with? Well, some community groups in the Hamlet of Jamesville made that easy for locals. Sunday, they were given pen and paper to write it all down. Our Iris St. Meran was there and tells us what some residents would like to see.

JAMESVILLE, N.Y. -- There's always room for improvement. And the streets of Jamesville could soon be on the receiving end. Community groups came together, Sunday, to gather input from neighbors in what they called a “Visioning Event.”

JAM PAC President (Jamesville Positive Action Committee) Vicki Barker said, "How do we improve Main Street? What kind of recreational activities are not here that you'd like to see here? What kind of businesses? A soft ice cream stand would be nice."

And a few people agreed with her.

"I'm thinking a coffee shop, an ice cream place. We have to drive a ways to get good ice cream,” said Jennifer Picciano.

Bill Cotterill has lived in the Hamlet since 1983 and has watched the transformation over the years.

“Traffic flow, the amount of traffic that comes through here,” Cotterill said, “It’s getting heavier and heavier. One thing I would like to see is more pedestrian safety in the area.”

The old Jamesville Fire Station is one of the places they're looking to get feedback on. There is a food pantry that operates in one portion of it, but they're hoping to get ideas on what to do with the rest of the space.

Barker said, “It’s such a large space and large opportunity to do more.”

What that will be depends on the input that is collected. Two bakeries came to the area after a similar event in the past. Aside from getting opinions, organizers wanted to give neighbors a chance to connect with one another and allow them to feel included in the decision making process in the place they call home.

After the ideas are collected they will be put into a progress report. An action plan will be created and they presented to the DeWitt town Board. If you live in Jamesville, but weren't able to attend you can still share your opinions.
