OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- Officials have found evidence of the West Nile virus in Oswego County.

The New York State Health Department announced Tuesday that samples taken from mosquito pools in the Town of New Haven in mid-July tested positive for West Nile.

The public health director says this is the third confirmed finding of the virus in the area this year.

The Oswego County Health Department urges residents to take precautions when heading outdoors. They say to use insect repellent properly by reading package instructions, limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn and where mosquitoes are most active and wear long shirts and pants when weather permits.

To minimize the mosquito population in your area, eliminate outdoor standing water, repair or replace door and window screens and change water in bird baths and horse troughs twice a week.

For more information about West Nile, you can call the Oswego County Health Department at (315) 349-3564 or visit health.ny.gov.
