SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Police and fire investigators have closed the case of a series of suspicious fires in Syracuse's Tipperary Hill area. The suspect in the arson cases now faces a charge of murder.

The fires began in May and were centered in the Avery Avenue area. Then, in June, a fire struck a home on Cayuga Street that left 90-year-old Frederick Brown dead.

The city's police and fire chiefs credited hard work by their investigative teams with tying together the leads leading to an arrest.

Shayne Davis, 32, was taken into custody and charged with murder in the second degree and five counts of arson in the second degree. He also faces one attempted arson charge.

“This is huge to have this individual off the street. This is such a huge event for us. It's hard to find something good when there's a fatal fire out of this. And, this man died from this and we can't forget that and his family, but even that family, I think, should have some closure on this case right now,” Syracuse Fire Chief Mark McLees.

The investigators say they are still looking at least one more fire in the Tipp Hill area to determine if Davis has any connection to that case.
