UNITED STATES -- A total of $36 million in cash, 53 weapons and more than five million packets of synthetic drugs were seized as part of Operation Log Jam, a nationwide crackdown on the products known as bath salts.

Officials say the DEA initiative targeted retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers in more than 109 cities across the country. There were a number of raids around Upstate New York on Wednesday.

Authorities say there has been a big increase in synthetic drug use over the last couple of years, particularly among teens and young adults. In turn, manufacturing is growing as well.

"We started seeing these a couple of years ago and looking into them. And we've had cases over the last couple of years. You know, we've seen the sophistication grow and in that one I believe it was a company called 'Mr. Nice Guy' that actually rented out commercial space, it was large scale, we're seeing more and more of those," said DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart.

In addition to the items seized, authorities say 91 people were arrested as part of Operation Log Jam.
